Emanuel works as a butcher in a kosher slaughterhouse.

After his wife leaves him, he tries to understand how he has sinned and begins to believe that the blame is in the method of slaughter that causes extreme suffering to the animals.

When he tries to fix this, the city rabbis threaten to eliminate him socially and economically. Emanuel tries to get the town's public to support his struggle, but in order for them to follow, him he needs a miracle.
